The Black Diamond JetForce pack provided added security for venturing into the backcountry. A first in the industry, the JetForce pack marked a departure in the world of airbags by utilizing a battery and fan-based system.
The technology was unique in the sense that it abandoned traditional canister deployment systems by utilizing a lithium ion battery-powered jet fan. Since the system was rechargeable, it eliminated the cost of expensive canisters and refills, and it got rid of the added hassle of trying to travel with compressed air or nitrogen. The battery supported at least four deployments on a single charge. The bag itself was made of a puncture-resistant Cordura fabric and was designed to automatically deflate after three minutes in order to potentially create an air pocket in the off-chance of a full burial.
